One of the unintended victims of rogue online pharmacies are senior citizens who depend on low-cost drugs from overseas.

Advocates for the elderly, many of whom are living off their obliterated retirement savings, are up in arms over a new proposal being pushed through Congress that would limit the number of countries from where Americans can buy prescription drugs to one: Canada.

The Dorgan-Snowe bill allows direct purchases from Canadian pharmacies but limits wholesale and retail purchases of prescribed medicines from other Tier One countries, including Australia and New Zealand, even if their pharmaceutical industries meet U.S. standards.

Last month, Jared Robert Wheat, an online pharma entrepreneur from Georgia, was sentenced to four years in jail for manufacturing counterfeit drugs such as Ambien, Xanax, Zoloft and Viagra in Belize and selling them over the Internet.

He also had to forfeit $3 million. Yet, Wheat's Web site, Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, is still selling herbal supplements for “fat loss,” “sexual performance” and “muscle and strength” with a banner proclaiming the company’s tenth anniversary. One of Wheat’s most popular products, a “revolutionary sexual supplement” called Stamina-RX, is even available on Amazon and GNC, despite an FDA warning that the drug poses “possible health risks.”

The folks behind the 2009 ePharma Summit—held in February in Philadelphia, PA—are anything if not highly e-organized.

A business rate was negotiated in advance at the pricey Philadelphia Hyatt Regency hotel, booked by “travel partner” The Global Executive, an “event lifecycle company.”
